PERFORMANCE
ASSIGNMENT S3b
|
Finding
the Experimental Volume of CO2 Produced
Procedure:
- Obtain
a 600 ml Erlenmeyer Flask, a 600 ml beaker, 100 ml graduated cylinder,
rubber stopper and rubber tube.
- Find
the mass of the alka-seltzer tablet and record.
- Fill
the Erlenmeyer Flask with 500 ml of water and tape an alka-seltzer tablet
so that it hangs inside the flask below the stopper but above the water.
- Fit
the rubber tube to the stopper and insert the stopper into the flask.
- Invert
the flask, the alka-seltzer should begin to react, and collect the water
displaced from the flask in the beaker.
Keep the beaker above the flask.
- Once
the alka-seltzer is completely reacted, place the flask right-side up and
collect any water still in the rubber tube.
- Measure
and record the amount of water collected.
- Repeat
the steps for about 75%, 50% and 25% of the tablet, weigh and record the
mass each time.
- Find
the theoretical production of CO2 for each of the four samples
and record.
- Calculate
the percent yield for CO2 and record.

Graph:
- Construct
a graph that shows percentage on the x-axis and volume of CO2
produced on the y-axis.
- From
the previous calculations, graph the theoretical predictions for CO2 produced
at 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% of the alka-seltzer tablet.
- From
the experimental data, graph the actual production of CO2 at
the percentages used.
- Title,
label and key the graph, make sure the two line graphs are in different
colors.
