Finding the Pressure Required to Release the Cap

 

Procedure:

 

  1. Obtain a white 35mm film can, washer, bolt & nut and a string.
  2. Assemble the bolt so that the washer is held on the inside of the lid and the bolt protrudes from the center of the lid.
  3. Attach the nut and the string so that a bucket can be hung beneth the lid.
  4. As the can is held with the lid on, slowly add sand to the bucket until the lid is released from the can.
  5. Find the weight of the bucket, sand and film can top in newtons and record.
  6. Repeat four more times.
